The Super NES port of Mortal Kombat was developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment (in North America and Europe) and by Acclaim Japan for the Japanese market in 1993. The original arcade game was developed by Midway and released in 1992.
Shang Tsung playthrough
In the Super NES port of Mortal Kombat, Shang Tsung is an unplayable boss. With in-game glitch and cheating device, it is possible to play as him, but will be glitched compared to what the CPU can do. However, in 2019, a hack was done on the game, named Mortal Kombat Champion Edition, allowing Goro, Shang Tsung and Reptile to be playable as intended, with the cost of minor glitches.
To select Shang Tsung, you must hold the Select Button while selecting Liu Kang.
Shang Tsung doesn’t have his front walking sprite he had in the Arcade, which makes him unable to actually go forward. If the player tries to press forward, he will walk backward in a very fast motion. His very powerful fireball is also severely nerfed in the Super NES port. Instead of shooting a volley 4 fast fireball, he will only shoot one slow fireball. To shoot it, the player must press Block, Back or Down.
However, the player can fully control his ability to morph (including morphing back). In practice, pressing any of the buttons with or without the Select button will make you morph into the other character:
- Johnny Cage : High Kick
- Kano : High Punch
- Raiden : Low Kick
- Liu Kang : Low Punch
- Scorpion : Hold Select and press High Kick
- Sub-Zero : Hold Select and press High Punch
- Sonya : Hold Select and press Low Kick
- Goro : Hold Select and press Low Punch
Shang Tsung can’t morph into Reptile (since he is technically not a character in the game). Unlike later game, the player can morph back and into another character at will. Simply pressing L while morphed will cause Shang Tsung to become himself. This makes him the most versatile character, having tons of move and combo possibilities.
He can perform fatality when morphed, but some of them will result in minor glitch. Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Kano fatality will work properly, but Shang will not morph back into himself, and the announcer will say the character name he morphed to for the fatality. His name will be displayed, however. There is a minor glitch palette when he performs Rayden fatality. His ability to do fatality allow him to fight Reptile (since he can fill the requirement).
His mirror match is against Johnny Cage at the Pit Bottom.
There are a few issues when there is a Shang Tsung mirror match (which will happen since he is the final boss).
- The Player 2 palette will render him completely white with some glitch color
- His name will be cut off in the life bar, but only for Player 1
As a side note, Shang Tsung doesn’t have an ending or a “regular” profile like the playable character. The author of the hack simply skips these screens as soon as his ID is loaded in the memory.
